WhatsApp Catalog and Product Messages: Setup and Limits
WhatsApp catalog and product messages explained: single and multi-product messages, catalog templates, carts, orders, payments availability, setup steps and limits.

Short answer
A WhatsApp catalog is an inventory of products or services uploaded to Meta and connected to your WhatsApp Business account, so customers can browse, add items to a cart and send an order inside the chat. On the API you share items with single-product, multi-product (up to 30 items) and carousel messages, or with catalog templates to start a conversation. Orders reach you as webhook events.

Key takeaways
- A catalog is uploaded through Meta Commerce Manager or the Commerce API, connected to your WhatsApp account, then switched on per business phone number with the cart and catalog-visibility settings.
- Single-product and multi-product messages can only be sent inside an existing chat thread; to open a conversation you need an approved catalog, single-product or multi-product template, which Meta categorises as marketing.
- A multi-product message shows up to 30 products in sections; a product carousel holds 2 to 10 cards; a cart takes up to 99 units of each item with no limit on distinct items.
- When a customer sends a cart, an order webhook describes its contents; you then confirm, take payment and fulfil in your own systems.
- Meta documents payments inside WhatsApp only for specific countries, such as India and Brazil; elsewhere payment happens through your own checkout or payment link.
This guide is for online shops, retailers and restaurants that want customers to browse products, build a cart and place an order without leaving WhatsApp. You will learn what the catalog is, which message formats exist, what limits Meta documents, how to set it up and where payments fit.
What is a WhatsApp catalog?
A WhatsApp catalog is a structured list of your products or services, connected to your WhatsApp account, that customers can browse and order from inside the chat. See also our short glossary entry on the WhatsApp catalog.
Each item has a name, description, price, images and availability; products can also carry a SKU. Meta notes that a catalog can list services such as appointments, consultations and subscriptions as well as physical goods. You upload the inventory to Meta through Commerce Manager or the Commerce API and connect it to your WhatsApp account. Meta's commerce settings then decide whether customers see a cart and a storefront icon.
The WhatsApp Business app has its own simple catalog you manage by hand. This article covers the catalog on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the API route that connects to your store and to automation. If you are still deciding between the two, read WhatsApp Business API vs Business app.
Which product message types does WhatsApp offer?
Meta offers four ways to show products in a chat: a single-product message, a multi-product message, a catalog message and a product carousel. Each also exists, or can be approximated, for outside the conversation window as a template.
| Format | What the customer sees | Documented limits |
|---|---|---|
| Single-product message (SPM) | One product with image, price and description | One catalog ID and product ID; optional body and footer |
| Multi-product message (MPM) | Curated selection in sections | Up to 30 products; header required (text) |
| Catalog message | Thumbnail of your whole catalog to browse | No numeric limit stated |
| Product carousel message | Horizontally scrollable product cards | 2 to 10 cards; body up to 1,024 characters; no header, footer or buttons |
| Catalog link | A wa.me/c/<your number> link that opens your catalog |
Catalog must be enabled |
Practical advice from the limits: use a single-product message when a customer asked about one item, a multi-product message to answer "what do you have in blue?" with a short list, and the whole catalog when they want to browse. Carousels suit visual categories such as desserts or dresses.
Product messages can only be sent inside an existing chat thread, not as notifications. That is where the 24-hour customer service window matters: a customer message opens a window in which you can send these formats without a template, and our WhatsApp 24-hour window guide explains the rules. Product detail pages show product images only, not videos or GIFs, and customers on very old app versions do not receive the message (you get a webhook notice instead).
How do catalog templates work?
Catalog templates let you start a conversation with a product-led message outside the 24-hour window. They are marketing templates, so they need opt-in, approval and the marketing rate.
Meta documents three template types:
| Template | Meta category | Key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog template | Marketing | Body up to 1,024 characters; optional footer up to 60; fixed "View catalog" button; thumbnail from a chosen item |
| Single-product template | Marketing | Card body up to 160 characters; footer up to 60; button "View"; forwarding disabled |
| Multi-product template | Marketing | Up to 10 sections, 30 products in total; header up to 60 characters; section title up to 24; body up to 1,024 |
All three need an e-commerce catalog with inventory connected to your account. Customers need a reasonably recent WhatsApp version (v2.22.24 or later for the multi-product and single-product templates). An approved template is sent through the messages endpoint like any other, naming the template and, for catalog templates, an optional SKU whose image becomes the header thumbnail.
A catalog template example (marketing) for a spring sale:
Hi {{1}}, our spring collection is in. Browse every piece and order here in the chat. Button: View catalog
Because these are promotional, they follow the same rules as any marketing message: consent, a way to stop, per-user marketing limits and charges per delivered message. See our guides on template categories and approval and how to send WhatsApp marketing messages. An abandoned cart reminder is a related marketing use; the flow is in our abandoned cart recovery guide.
How do carts and orders work?
A customer adds items to a cart in the chat and sends it, and WhatsApp triggers an order webhook that describes the contents. You then confirm, collect payment and fulfil in your own systems.
Meta's cart rules matter for your design:
- Customers can add up to 99 units of each catalog item and there is no limit on distinct items.
- A cart belongs to one customer, one business chat thread and one device; it does not follow them to another phone.
- A cart has no expiry; it stays until the customer sends it, then it is cleared.
- A sent cart cannot be edited, so the customer sends a new one to change an order.
- Businesses cannot send carts to customers.
- Messages sent through the Cloud API do not show a shopping cart icon in the chat header, unlike the Business app, so tell customers how to order ("tap Add to cart on a product, then send your cart").
Customers who tap a "Message business" button on a product arrive as a text message with a context object that describes the product they were viewing. Use it to start the conversation at the right item.
What should happen after an order arrives?
- Acknowledge with a message that restates the items and the total.
- Check stock and delivery details against your store.
- Take payment (see the next section).
- Send a confirmation template. An order confirmation is a utility example in Meta's categorisation, for instance "Your order {{order_number}} is confirmed."
- Send shipping updates. A message with a tracking number and expected delivery date is another utility example.
- Hand over to an agent for substitutions, sizes or complaints.
Keep promotional content out of these confirmations; adding offers or recommendations turns the message into marketing. Our conversational commerce guide shows the wider journey.
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp?
Only where Meta provides payment features for the market, and then with conditions. In other markets, send a payment link or direct the customer to your checkout.
From Meta's documentation:
- India: Meta describes payments through UPI apps, cards, NetBanking and wallets, with several integration modes that depend on your payment gateway, and some modes need allowlisting. Businesses based in India must also comply with online selling laws.
- Brazil: A business sends an order details message with a unique reference ID and receives payment status by webhook. Methods named include Pix, payment links and boleto. Meta states that WhatsApp does not reconcile payments: you do that with your payment service provider.
Meta's documentation index lists other payment pages, but we have only described the two above because those are the ones we could verify. Always read the current page for your country, and do not assume in-chat payment exists where you sell. Where it does not, a typical pattern is: order arrives, you send a payment link in a message, the customer pays on your gateway, and a utility template confirms. Do not ask customers to type card numbers into the chat.
How do you set up a WhatsApp catalog?
Setting up takes four stages: upload inventory, configure commerce settings, share products and receive responses. Meta describes the same four stages.
- Create or choose a catalog in Commerce Manager or prepare to use the Commerce API.
- Upload items in Commerce Manager or through the Commerce API. Give each item a clear title, price, image, description, availability and a SKU, because the SKU (retailer ID) is what you reference in product messages.
- Fix review issues. Meta reviews items automatically against its commerce policy; disapproved items can be appealed in Commerce Manager.
- Connect the catalog to your WhatsApp account.
- Set commerce settings per business phone number. Cart (
is_cart_enabled) defaults to true and catalog visibility (is_catalog_visible) defaults to false, so switch visibility on if you want the storefront icon and catalog button. If you disable the catalog, catalog links and "View catalog" buttons show an "Invalid catalog link" message. - Send test messages to your own number: a single product, a multi-product message, then a full catalog link.
- Handle order webhooks and connect them to your order system.
- Create catalog templates if you want to start conversations; submit them for approval.
If you run Shopify, WooCommerce, Salla or Zid, see our integrations for how store events reach the messaging platform. Your platform account team can also advise on catalog sync from your store.
What are good use cases?
Catalogs work best where the customer can choose from a visual, structured range and where questions are quick.
- Fashion and beauty retail: multi-product messages by occasion, carts for repeat orders.
- Restaurants and groceries: menu categories as sections, with a delivery flow after the cart. Our restaurant guide shows the full flow.
- Services: appointments and consultations listed as items, followed by a booking confirmation.
- B2B reorders: a multi-product message with the customer's usual items.
- Post-purchase cross-sell: a marketing template to opted-in customers that opens the relevant range.
For a deeper commerce view, see the WhatsApp marketing ecommerce guide.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Stale prices and stock. Out-of-date availability is the most common complaint in chat commerce; sync from your store.
- Wrong product IDs. If none match the catalog, the API returns an error and sends nothing; if only some match, unmatched items are dropped.
- Sending a product message cold. It can only go into an existing thread; use an approved template to start.
- Dumping the whole catalog when one product would convert better.
- Mixing offers into utility messages. Meta reclassifies promotional utility content.
- No human option. Provide a way to reach an agent for sizing, delivery and returns.
- Ignoring commerce policy. Meta restricts certain goods and reported products are reviewed.
How do you measure catalog performance?
Measure the funnel from message to paid order, and attribute it to the entry point.
| Step | Metric |
|---|---|
| Reach | Product messages or templates delivered |
| Interest | Product views, replies, "Message business" taps |
| Intent | Carts sent ÷ conversations |
| Conversion | Orders paid ÷ carts sent |
| Revenue quality | Order value, returns, repeat orders |
| Cost | Delivered marketing templates × Meta's rate, plus agent time |
Compare a group that gets a catalog template with a holdout group that does not. Use the WhatsApp pricing calculator and our WhatsApp pricing pages for Meta's per-message rates, and measure revenue per delivered message, not clicks.

Frequently asked questions
What is a WhatsApp catalog?
A WhatsApp catalog is a list of your products or services, with names, descriptions, prices, images and availability, uploaded to Meta and connected to your WhatsApp account. Customers browse it in the chat, add items to a cart and send an order. Services such as appointments and consultations can be listed too.
Do I need the API to send product messages?
The free WhatsApp Business app has a basic catalog you can share by hand. Sending product messages, carts and catalog templates from software, at scale and tied to your store, uses the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). Most teams move to the API once several agents or any automation are involved.
How many products can a WhatsApp message show?
A multi-product message shows up to 30 products grouped in sections. A single-product message shows one. A product carousel message holds between 2 and 10 product cards. A multi-product template allows up to 10 sections and 30 products in total. Limits can change, so check Meta's documentation before building.
Can I send a product message to someone who has not messaged me?
Not as a free-form message. Single-product and multi-product messages can only be sent inside an existing chat thread. To start the conversation you need an approved catalog, single-product or multi-product template, which Meta classes as marketing, and the customer must have opted in to hear from your business.
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp?
Only where Meta offers it. Its documentation describes payment features for India and Brazil, with their own requirements, such as a payment gateway or payment service provider. In other markets, the usual pattern is to send a payment link or direct the customer to your checkout, then confirm with a utility template.
Why is my product not showing in WhatsApp?
Common causes: the item was not approved by Meta's automatic review, the product ID in the message does not match the catalog, the catalog is not connected to your WhatsApp account, or catalog visibility is off for that number. Fix the item in Commerce Manager, appeal a disapproval there, and check the message ID matches the catalog.
