Short answer
Updated
OmniChannels.ai connects your Instagram professional account through Meta's authorization flow, so direct messages arrive in the shared Omni Inbox. Several agents answer with text, media and attachments, a chatbot or AI agent can reply first, and you can also send through the API to people who have messaged your business. Meta's rules apply: customers must message you first, and replies must fit Meta's messaging window.
What the Instagram inbox gives your team
Connect through Meta's login
Authorize your Instagram professional account with Meta's OAuth flow. Access is granted to the app, not shared through passwords.
DMs in the shared inbox
Direct messages land in the Omni Inbox next to WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram and email, in one thread per customer.
Several agents on one account
Sales and support agents work the same Instagram account at the same time, without passing a phone around.
Reply with media and attachments
Answer with text, product photos and attachments, so customers get sizes, colors and prices without leaving the chat.
Keep an eye on the reply window
Meta limits how long a business can reply after a customer's message. Working DMs from a shared inbox helps the team answer within it.
Chatbots and AI agents
A chatbot or BroadNet AI agent can answer common DM questions in English and Arabic and pass the conversation to an agent.
API sending to existing conversations
Send messages through the API to people who have already messaged your business, within Meta's rules.
Arabic and English conversations
Agents reply in the language the customer writes in, with the workspace available in Arabic and English.

What Instagram messaging allows a business to do
These rules come from Meta, not from OmniChannels.ai. They change, so confirm them in Meta's current Instagram Messaging documentation.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Starting a conversation | The customer must message your account first, for example from a story reply, a post or the Message button on your profile. |
| Reply window | Meta's documentation describes a standard window of 24 hours after the customer's last message, with longer allowances for human agent replies in some cases. |
| Account type | A professional account (business or creator) is needed to connect through Meta's messaging APIs. |
| Bulk campaigns | Instagram DM is a conversation channel. API sends are limited to people who messaged you; use WhatsApp, RCS, SMS or email for campaigns to opted-in lists. |
How to connect Instagram DMs
The connection takes a few authorization steps on Meta's side; we guide you through them during onboarding.
- 1
Check your account type
Make sure your Instagram account is a professional account and linked as Meta requires for messaging access.
- 2
Authorize with Meta
Log in through Meta's authorization screen inside the workspace and grant permission to manage your Instagram messages.
- 3
Give agents access
Decide which agents answer Instagram conversations, and agree who handles sales questions and who handles support.
- 4
Test with a real DM
Send a message from a personal account, reply from the inbox and confirm media and attachments arrive as expected.
Who gets the most from an Instagram team inbox?
A good fit when
- Customers discover you on Instagram and ask about products, sizes, prices or bookings by DM.
- More than one person needs to answer DMs on the same account.
- Your team already handles WhatsApp or email and wants Instagram in the same workspace.
- You serve customers in Arabic and English.
Good to know before you start
- You cannot start a DM with a customer who has not messaged you first.
- Replies must fit Meta's messaging window; late replies may not be deliverable.
- Instagram comments, posts and ads are managed in Meta's own tools, not in the inbox.
Instagram DM inbox questions
Do we need to share our Instagram password?
No. You connect the account through Meta's authorization screen, which grants messaging access to the app. You can review or remove that access in Meta's settings at any time.
How long do we have to reply to an Instagram DM?
Meta's documentation describes a 24-hour window after the customer's message, with a longer allowance for replies from a human agent in some cases. These rules change, so check Meta's current Instagram Messaging documentation.
Can we send promotional DMs to all our followers?
No. Instagram messaging through Meta's APIs only reaches people who messaged you. You can send to them through the API within Meta's rules, but for campaigns to opted-in customers use WhatsApp, RCS, SMS, Telegram or email.
Will Instagram and WhatsApp messages from the same customer appear together?
Yes. The Omni Inbox keeps one thread per customer, so agents can see earlier messages from other channels. Matching depends on the identifiers each channel shares, so a customer who uses a different name on Instagram may appear separately.
Does it work with a personal Instagram account?
Meta's messaging access requires a professional account, either business or creator. Switching is free in the Instagram app, but check how it affects your profile before you change it.
Can a chatbot answer Instagram DMs?
Yes. A flow chatbot or an AI agent powered by BroadNet AI can answer common DM questions in English and Arabic and hand the conversation to an agent in the inbox.
