WhatsApp Business API

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?

Updated

Short answer

The WhatsApp Business app is a phone app built for small business owners who chat with customers by hand. The WhatsApp Business API, part of Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, connects WhatsApp to a business's own software for messaging at scale, with automation, templates and webhooks. Meta does not charge for app messages; API messages are charged per delivery.

When should a business move to the API?

Move when one phone can no longer keep up: several agents need to share the number, you want order or appointment messages sent automatically, or you want campaigns with reporting. Meta's documentation describes the platform as the way businesses communicate with customers at scale.

The API also brings rules the app does not have, such as template approval, template categories, messaging limits and per-message pricing. Budget for these before switching.

Can one number use both?

Yes, through what Meta calls coexistence. A business onboards its existing WhatsApp Business app number through a partner's Embedded Signup flow, then keeps chatting one-to-one in the app while software sends higher volumes through the Cloud API.

Meta's documentation lists conditions: the app must be version 2.24.17 or later, the number has a fixed throughput of 20 messages per second, chat history from the six months before onboarding can be synchronised, and group chats are not synchronised. Some app features are not supported, so check Meta's current list.

  1. Update the WhatsApp Business app to a supported version.
  2. Start Embedded Signup with your provider and choose to connect your existing app number.
  3. Confirm the connection in the WhatsApp Business app when prompted.
  4. Decide whether to share chat history; Meta gives the provider 24 hours after onboarding to sync it, or onboarding must be redone.

Running the API with a provider

Most businesses reach the API through a Business Solution Provider. OmniChannels.ai, through BroadNet as an official Meta Business Solution Provider, onboards numbers with Embedded Signup and adds a shared Omni Inbox for multiple agents.
