The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's programmatic interface that lets medium and large businesses send and receive WhatsApp messages from their own software, at scale, through a verified business phone number. Today it is delivered as Meta's Cloud API.
The WhatsApp Business API is the developer-facing part of the WhatsApp Business Platform. Instead of typing in a phone app, a business sends messages with HTTP requests that carry JSON payloads, and receives customer replies and delivery statuses through webhooks. Meta hosts the infrastructure as the Cloud API, which is built on the Graph API.
Two rules shape almost every implementation. First, a business may send free-form messages only inside a 24-hour customer service window that the customer opens by messaging the business. Second, outside that window it can send only pre-approved message templates, which are categorised as marketing, utility or authentication and charged per delivered message.
Businesses usually reach the API through a partner such as a Business Solution Provider, which handles onboarding (often with Embedded Signup), billing, compliance support and tooling such as a shared inbox or campaign manager. The business still owns its WhatsApp Business Account and phone number.
In the GCC and wider MENA region, WhatsApp is a primary customer channel for banks, retailers, airlines and government services, so the API is commonly used for order and delivery updates, appointment reminders, OTP codes and customer support in Arabic and English.
A common mistake is to treat the API like bulk SMS. Messages need opt-in, templates must match their category, and poor engagement lowers quality ratings, which can pause templates and slow growth of messaging limits.
