SMS

Can I send SMS with an alphanumeric sender ID in the USA?

Updated

Short answer

No. US carriers route business SMS through numbers, not text names, so an alphanumeric sender ID such as ACME is not supported for US recipients. Send from a registered 10DLC number, a verified toll-free number or a short code instead, and put your brand name at the start of every message so people know who is texting.

Which sender should you use?

Number typeRegistrationBest for
10DLCBrand and campaign via The Campaign Registry; 7 to 14 business days in our dataConversations, reminders, mid-volume marketing
Toll-freeText enablement plus provider verificationService lines and alerts
Short codeApplication and carrier approvalHigh volume, time-critical programs

How do you show your brand without a sender ID?

  • Start every message with the brand name, for example Harbor Fitness:.
  • Include opt-out wording such as Reply STOP to opt out.
  • Keep messages to one segment where possible.

What rules apply to US texts?

Marketing texts need prior express written consent under the FCC's TCPA rules and may be sent only between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the recipient's local time. STOP replies must be honoured. Our team can prepare and file the registration with you.
