What is SMS gateway?

SMS gateway API · SMS server

Definition

An SMS gateway is a system that converts messages between applications (over HTTP, SMPP or email) and mobile networks, handling routing, encoding, segmentation and delivery receipts.

The term covers both a provider’s platform that connects to many operators and on-premise software that connects one company’s systems to a provider.

Core gateway functions: accept messages through APIs or SMPP, normalise numbers, choose encoding, split long messages, select the route per destination, queue to respect throughput, and return statuses.

A typical journey: your app posts a message to the gateway, which checks the number format, picks GSM-7 or UCS-2 encoding (Arabic text always needs UCS-2, so one segment holds 70 characters instead of 160), attaches the registered sender ID and hands the message to the operator’s SMSC over SMPP. The operator later returns a delivery receipt, which the gateway maps to a status such as delivered, expired or rejected and pushes back to you by webhook.

How it differs from related terms: the SMSC is the operator’s own store-and-forward centre inside the mobile network; an SMS aggregator is a business that resells routes to many operators; an SMS API is the developer interface in front of a gateway. The gateway is the routing and translation layer between them, and one provider can play all three roles.

When evaluating a gateway, ask about direct operator connections versus resold routes, sustained throughput (messages per second per account), delivery-receipt coverage per country, failover to a second route, and how sender ID registration is handled in markets that require it, such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Hardware “GSM gateways” using SIM cards are a different thing; using them for business traffic is generally considered grey routing and is blocked by operators.

Today most businesses use a cloud gateway through an SMS API or CPaaS platform instead of running their own. OmniChannels.ai gives access to BroadNet’s SMS gateway through a REST API and SMPP.

Example

App → gateway: to +9715XXXXXXXX, sender “YourBrand”, text “Your order 4821 has shipped”
Gateway: GSM-7, 1 segment, route chosen for the recipient’s operator, submitted over SMPP
Operator → gateway: delivery receipt DELIVRD
Gateway → app (webhook): status “delivered”
