**Definition:** Wholesale A2P SMS is high-volume business messaging traffic traded between providers, aggregators and operators at carrier rates, usually over SMPP connections, as opposed to retail SMS sold to individual businesses through a portal or API.

Wholesale buyers are aggregators, resellers, CPaaS platforms and operators that need termination in many countries. They connect over SMPP binds, receive per-operator rate cards that change frequently, and route traffic based on price, quality and coverage.

Route quality is the central issue. Direct operator routes deliver with the registered sender ID and accurate delivery receipts; grey routes (SIM boxes or unauthorised paths) can be cheaper but risk filtering, sender ID replacement and fake receipts.
