**Definition:** An SMS firewall is an operator-side system that inspects incoming SMS traffic and blocks or charges messages that arrive over unauthorised routes, carry spam or fraud, or break the operator’s A2P rules.

Firewalls analyse signalling and content: sender IDs, originating networks, volumes, message patterns and keywords. They separate genuine P2P traffic from A2P disguised as P2P and from spoofed or malicious messages.

For operators, firewalls protect subscribers from spam and smishing and ensure A2P traffic arrives on paid routes. GSMA publishes guidance on SMS fraud and security for operators.

For senders, a firewall is the reason grey-route traffic suddenly fails. Legitimate traffic can also be blocked if the sender ID is unregistered or content looks like phishing, such as unknown short links.

To stay clear: register sender IDs, use sanctioned routes, keep links on your own domain and avoid sudden volume spikes without warning your provider.
