**Definition:** An SMS aggregator is a company that connects businesses and other providers to many mobile operators, combining traffic from many senders and routing it to operator networks through direct or partner connections.

Aggregators sit between enterprises (or resellers) and operators. They offer one API or SMPP connection and handle routing, pricing by MCC/MNC, sender ID registration, delivery receipts and billing.

Tier-1 aggregators hold many direct operator connections; others resell routes from upstream aggregators. Each extra hop adds latency and makes problems harder to trace.

When evaluating an aggregator, ask which routes are direct, how sender IDs are registered, how delivery receipts are sourced and how traffic is protected against fraud such as SMS pumping.

Wholesale aggregators also sell routes to other providers and resellers, priced per destination network.
