**Definition:** RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the GSMA standard that upgrades native phone messaging beyond SMS, adding typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution media, group chat and, for businesses, branded and interactive messages. It runs over mobile data or Wi-Fi.

RCS is defined by the GSMA, mainly through the Universal Profile specification, and is built into the default messaging apps: Google Messages on Android and, since iOS 18, Apple Messages on iPhone. Users do not install a separate app; RCS activates when the device, app and carrier support it.

For businesses, the important part is RCS Business Messaging (RBM). It lets a verified brand send messages with its logo and name, rich cards, carousels and suggested replies and actions into the same inbox where customers already receive SMS.

RCS availability depends on the carrier and the device. Business messages therefore need a fallback: when a number is not RCS-capable, the platform returns an error and the message is sent as SMS instead.

In the GCC, RBM availability varies by operator and country, so confirm carrier launch status for each market before planning an RCS-first campaign.
