# P2P messaging

**Definition:** P2P messaging (person-to-person) is SMS sent between two individual subscribers from their own phones, as opposed to A2P traffic generated by business applications.

P2P SMS is the original use of the Short Message Service: a person types a message and sends it to another person. Volumes per sender are low and traffic is conversational, roughly balanced in both directions.

Operators price and filter P2P differently from A2P. Retail plans often bundle P2P messages, while business traffic carries a termination charge. That price gap is what makes disguising A2P as P2P attractive to grey-route operators.

Signs that traffic is not genuine P2P include high volumes from one number, identical content to many recipients and one-way flows. SMS firewalls use these patterns to block A2P that arrives through P2P channels.

For businesses, the takeaway is simple: send through a provider with sanctioned A2P routes. Using personal SIMs or SIM banks for business messaging breaches operator terms and leads to blocking.
