# Mobile number portability

**Definition:** Mobile number portability (MNP) lets subscribers keep their phone number when switching mobile operators. As a result, a number’s prefix no longer reliably shows which operator serves it.

When a number is ported, the national porting database is updated and the recipient network routes calls and SMS to the new operator. Senders that route by prefix alone may send the message to the wrong network.

For A2P SMS this matters for routing and pricing: rates often differ by operator, and a direct route to the old operator may fail for a ported number. Providers use MNP or HLR lookups to determine the current operator.

Most GCC countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, have number portability, so prefix-based routing tables are not sufficient on their own there.

If delivery rates drop for a subset of numbers on one operator, porting is one of the first things to check.
