# Conversion attribution (UTM)

**Definition:** Conversion attribution links a sale, sign-up or other goal back to the message that caused it. In messaging this is usually done with UTM parameters added to links, so analytics tools can credit the right channel, campaign and message.

UTM parameters are query-string tags read by Google Analytics and most other analytics tools: utm_source (for example whatsapp or sms), utm_medium (for example messaging), utm_campaign (the campaign name), and optionally utm_content and utm_term to tell variants apart. Google provides URL builders to create them consistently.

Use one naming convention across teams and channels; "WhatsApp", "whatsapp" and "wa" are counted as three different sources. Keep UTMs out of OTP and transactional messages, where they add length and no value.

Messaging adds complications: clicks inside in-app browsers may lose cookies, people often convert later on another device, and SMS character limits make long URLs costly. Short branded links that redirect to the full UTM URL solve the length problem while keeping the tags.

Attribution models matter. Last-click attribution credits the final touch and tends to undervalue messages that started the journey. Compare against a hold-out group that did not receive the message to estimate the true uplift.

Combine delivery, read, click and conversion data to calculate return on each campaign.

## Example

```
https://acme.ae/sale?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=messaging&utm_campaign=eid_sale_2026&utm_content=carousel_v2
```
