answer: "A WhatsApp Business display name must represent your business and relate clearly to its legal name or external branding. Meta rejects names that are a generic term or place on its own, imply endorsed status such as \"Official\", reference Meta's apps, contain promotional wording or are written as a web or email address. Review starts automatically when your number becomes eligible for higher messaging limits, and a rejected name can be edited and resubmitted or appealed."
takeaways: ["The display name is reviewed against Meta's display name guidelines; you can keep sending messages while it is pending, and review starts when the number becomes eligible for higher messaging limits.", "A good name says which business is talking: brand name, optionally with a location or department. A generic word or a place name alone fails.", "You can change a display name up to 10 times per 30-day period, and after approval you have 14 days to re-register the number or the name must be reviewed again.", "An approved display name is a prerequisite for Official Business Account status, and a pending name change blocks a number migration.", "The same guidelines apply in Arabic and other languages; write the name as it appears on your trade licence and website."]
faq:
  - q: "What are the WhatsApp Business display name rules?"
a: "The name must represent your business, product, service or department and relate clearly to your legal name and external branding. Meta's guidelines rule out a generic term or place on its own, endorsed-status words such as Official or Verified, references to Meta or its apps, promotional wording and names written as a URL or email address."
  - q: "How long does WhatsApp display name approval take?"
a: "Meta does not publish a fixed time in its developer documentation. Review starts automatically when the number becomes eligible for higher messaging limits, and Meta then sends a phone_number_name_update webhook and a Business Suite notification with the decision. You can keep sending messages while it is pending."
  - q: "Why was my WhatsApp display name rejected?"
a: "Usual causes are a generic name, no visible link between the name and your legal company name or website, a forbidden word such as Official, a reference to WhatsApp or Facebook, or promotional text. Meta's webhook reports the decision as REJECTED; edit the name to follow the guidelines and resubmit, or appeal through developer support."
  - q: "How do I change my WhatsApp display name?"
a: "In WhatsApp Manager open Account tools, then Phone numbers, select the number, open the Profile tab and edit the display name. Through the API you send the new name and check the review status. You can change it up to 10 times in 30 days, and after approval you must re-register the number within 14 days."
  - q: "Can a WhatsApp display name be in Arabic?"
a: "Yes. Meta's guidelines apply to names in any language, though its examples are in English. Generic words with a city, such as a bare restaurant-plus-city name, fail for the same reason as in English. Write the name as it is on your trade licence and website, and consider a bilingual website that shows both forms."
  - q: "Is there a character limit for a WhatsApp display name?"
a: "Meta does not publish one in its developer documentation or guidelines article that we could find. Long names get cut off in the chat header on many phones, so put the distinctive brand part first and keep the name short."

# WhatsApp Display Name Rules: Guidelines and Approval

Canonical: https://omnichannels.ai/blog/whatsapp-display-name-guidelines/
Language: en
Publisher: OmniChannels.ai by BroadNet Technologies

This guide is for marketing, brand and compliance leads who must choose and register the name customers see on a WhatsApp Business API number. It covers what Meta's guidelines require, how review works, what to do after a rejection, how to change a name later and what to watch in Arabic and bilingual names. Meta can update its guidelines, so check the linked Help Center article before you submit.

## What is a WhatsApp display name?

A WhatsApp display name is the business name shown in your number's WhatsApp profile and, under certain conditions, in chats. Every number on the WhatsApp Business Platform needs one at registration.

Meta's phone number documentation states that you must provide display name information when registering a business phone number, and that names with an `EXPIRED` or `NONE` status cannot be used to register the number for API use. It is a different thing from the profile "About" text, and from the blue checkmark, which is covered in our [green tick guide](/blog/whatsapp-green-tick-official-business-account/).

## What are the WhatsApp display name guidelines?

The name should say which business is talking to the customer, and nothing else. The Meta Help Center article "Display name guidelines for the WhatsApp Business Platform" is the authority, and the principles below follow it.

| Rule | Passes | Fails |
|---|---|---|
| Represents a real business, product, service or department | "Fresh Produce Boston", "Fresh Produce Customer Service" | A phrase that names nobody |
| Not a generic term or generic place alone | Brand plus a location | "Fashion", "New York" |
| No words that suggest endorsed status | "Al Noor Home" | "Al Noor Official", "Verified Shop" |
| No reference to Meta or its apps | A brand name | Names containing Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram or Messenger |
| The business name only, without offers or claims | "Fresh Produce" | "Fresh Produce 50% Off", "Best rated store" |
| Not a website or email address | "Fresh Produce" | "freshproduce.com", "orders@freshproduce.com" |
| Clear relationship to your legal name and branding | Name matches website, documents and signage | A name unrelated to anything public |

Our [display name checker](/tools/whatsapp-display-name-checker/) tests a name against these principles, including Arabic. A clean result means no known problem; Meta still reviews every name.

## How do you pick a name that passes?

Start from your legal name and your public brand, then choose the version customers already recognise. Add a department or location only if it helps.

1. Write down the legal name on your trade licence and the brand name on your website and shop sign.
2. If both are the same or the brand is an obvious short form, use the brand.
3. If the brand does not obviously link to the company that owns the number, use the "Brand by Company" pattern, for example "Fruit Snacks by Fresh Produce", and state the relationship on your website.
4. Add a location or department only if you need to tell several numbers apart.
5. Remove emoji, decorative symbols, phone numbers and slogans. These are not all banned by Meta, but they look careless and risk review.
6. Put the distinctive part first, because the chat header truncates long names.
7. Check the name against your website, social pages and documents. They should show the same words.

Agencies, distributors and partners need a page that shows they work with the business named in the display name. A personal name is accepted when it is clear what the business is, for example a person's name followed by "Chiropractor".

## How does display name review work?

Review is automatic and based on the guidelines. It starts when your number becomes eligible for a higher messaging limit, and you can send messages while it is pending.

When the review finishes, WhatsApp sends a `phone_number_name_update` webhook and a Meta Business Suite notification. The decision is `APPROVED`, with `name_status` set to `APPROVED`, or `REJECTED`, with `name_status` set to `DECLINED`. To check status, request the `verified_name` and `name_status` fields on the phone number ID, or look at the Name column in WhatsApp Manager. Note that `verified_name` is the name you submitted, not proof of approval.

Eligibility for higher limits is explained in our [messaging limits guide](/blog/whatsapp-messaging-limits-quality-rating/). Business verification, covered in the [Meta business verification guide](/blog/meta-business-verification-guide/), is one route to those limits.

## What should you do if your display name is rejected?

Read the guidelines, edit the name so it follows them, and resubmit, or appeal if you believe the decision was wrong. Do not resubmit the same name.

| Likely reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Generic term or place | Add the brand name |
| No visible link to the legal name | Use "Brand by Company", and state the link on your website |
| Contains Official or Verified | Remove the word; the badge comes only from an Official Business Account request |
| References Meta or its apps | Rename; you cannot use the platform names as your brand |
| Promotional text | Keep only the business name |
| Looks like a URL or email | Use the brand name without the domain |
| Mismatch with the website | Align the website, social profiles and name |

After editing, the status shows `PENDING_REVIEW` until Meta decides. If you still disagree, Meta's documentation says you can appeal through Developer Support or Enterprise Developer Support. Our team can prepare the application and the evidence with you, but the decision stays with Meta.

## How do you change a WhatsApp display name later?

Edit it in WhatsApp Manager or through the API, wait for approval, then re-register the number. Meta's limits are 10 changes in any 30-day period.

### In WhatsApp Manager

1. Go to **Account tools**, then **Phone numbers**, and select the number.
2. Open the **Profile** tab and click **Edit** next to the display name.
3. Submit the new name and wait for the decision.

### Through the API

Send a POST request with `new_display_name`, then read `new_display_name` and `new_name_status`. After the `APPROVED` webhook arrives, call the register endpoint with your PIN. You do not need to repeat Embedded Signup. Re-registering before approval has no effect.

You have 14 days after approval to re-register. If that window expires, you must submit the name for review again. If your number has Official Business Account status, contact Meta's direct support to change the name.

Plan rebrands around these steps. A pending name change also blocks moving the number to another provider, as we explain in [migrating a WhatsApp number](/blog/migrate-whatsapp-number-between-providers/).

## Do you need an approved display name before you can send messages?

No. You can register the number and start sending while the name is pending, because review begins when the number becomes eligible for higher messaging limits. That does not make the name unimportant.

An approved display name is required for several later steps:

- **Official Business Account request.** Meta's criteria include business verification, an approved display name, two-step verification and at least 30 days on the platform.
- **Provider migration.** A number moving between providers must have an approved display name with no pending change.
- **Higher limits.** Review runs as the number reaches the eligibility threshold, so a poor name can surface at the moment you want to scale a campaign.

Pick the name before launch, not after your first large send. Use this order: finish [business verification](/blog/meta-business-verification-guide/), choose the number (see [which phone number to use](/blog/whatsapp-business-phone-number-guide/)), then submit the name with the website already showing the same brand.

## Can you use an Arabic or non-Latin display name?

Yes. Meta's guidelines apply to names in any language, though its examples are in English. Arabic names fail for the same reasons as English ones.

For example, a bare word meaning "Riyadh restaurant" is a generic term plus a place, and a name containing the Arabic word for "official" claims endorsed status. Use the brand as it appears on your trade licence.

Consistency matters more than script. If your licence shows an English name and your website uses an Arabic trading name, show both on the site. Avoid stretching letters with tatweel, decorative diacritics, or mixing Arabic and Latin letters in a way that differs from your documents. Meta does not ban these, but the name should match how the business is written elsewhere. Our guide to [Arabic customer messaging](/blog/arabic-customer-messaging-best-practices/) has more on bilingual copy.

## Worked example: a clinic group in Riyadh

"Najd Care", a synthetic clinic group, owns three numbers: appointments, billing and results. It submits "Najd Care Clinics" for all three and finds the same name is confusing in the contact list.

The team renames them "Najd Care Appointments", "Najd Care Billing" and "Najd Care Results", all with the brand first and a department after it, and shows the three lines on its website's contact page. It also checks that the licensed name appears in the footer. The names follow the principle in the guidelines, a recognisable brand plus a department, and customers can tell which line they are on.

## Common mistakes

- **Treating the display name as a marketing slogan.** It identifies the sender; the profile description is where a short pitch belongs.
- **Using the same name for every number without a differentiator.** Add a department or location so customers and agents can tell lines apart.
- **Choosing a name before checking the website.** Make the website match first.
- **Using a keyword name.** "Best Dubai Perfume" is generic and promotional.
- **Adding "Official" to look trusted.** Trust comes from an Official Business Account request, which needs an approved name.
- **Forgetting the 14-day re-register window.** An approved change that is never registered must be reviewed again.
- **Changing the name during a migration.** It blocks the move.
