answer: "A WhatsApp click-to-chat link has the format https://wa.me/ followed by your full international number with no plus sign, spaces or leading zeros, for example https://wa.me/971500000000. Add ?text= with URL-encoded words to prefill the customer's first message. Turn the link into a QR code for print, packaging and stores, and use a different prefilled message per placement so you can see which one started each chat."
takeaways: ["Click-to-chat links use https://wa.me/<number> with the full international number and no plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes or leading zeros.", "Adding ?text= with URL-encoded words prefills the customer's first message, which the customer can edit before sending.", "On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta's QR code and short link API allows prefilled messages up to 140 characters and up to 2,000 codes per phone number.", "Meta does not provide analytics for its WhatsApp QR codes and short links, so tracking relies on unique prefilled messages, landing pages or your own redirects.", "Nothing is sent until the customer taps send, so the chat is customer-initiated and opens a 24-hour customer service window."]
faq:
  - q: "How do I create a WhatsApp link for my business?"
a: "Write https://wa.me/ followed by your full international number without the plus sign, spaces or leading zeros, such as https://wa.me/966500000000 for a Saudi mobile. To prefill a message, add ?text= and URL-encode the text, so spaces become %20. Test the link on Android, iOS and desktop before publishing it."
  - q: "Can I track how many people clicked my WhatsApp link?"
a: "WhatsApp does not report link clicks or QR scans to you. To measure placements, give each one a unique prefilled message or reference code, route web traffic through a landing page with UTM parameters, or use your own redirect that logs clicks before sending users to wa.me. Count the chats that arrive with each code."
  - q: "Does a wa.me link work if the customer does not have my number saved?"
a: "Yes. Click-to-chat opens a chat with your number without the customer saving it as a contact. On mobile it opens the WhatsApp app; on desktop it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. If WhatsApp is not installed, the customer is prompted to install it."
  - q: "Is a message from a QR code free on the WhatsApp API?"
a: "The customer's first message opens a 24-hour customer service window, so your free-form replies are service messages. According to Meta's pricing documentation, from 1 October 2026 Meta charges service messages after the first 1,000 free per business phone number per month. Confirm current terms in Meta's pricing documentation."
  - q: "Can I change the prefilled message after printing a QR code?"
a: "A plain wa.me QR code has the message fixed in the code, so changing it means reprinting. QR codes created through Meta's API or Business Manager can have their prefilled message updated without changing the code. A QR code pointing to your own redirect URL can also be redirected later."

# WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Links and QR Codes: A Practical Guide

Canonical: https://omnichannels.ai/blog/whatsapp-click-to-chat-links-qr-codes/
Language: en
Publisher: OmniChannels.ai by BroadNet Technologies

This guide is for marketers, retail and ecommerce managers who want customers to start WhatsApp chats from websites, emails, receipts, packaging, shelves and storefronts. It shows the exact link format, how to write prefilled messages, how to produce QR codes that scan reliably, and how to track which placement started each conversation.

## How do I create a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?

Use https://wa.me/ followed by your full international number. Remove the plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes and any leading zero after the country code.

| Written number | Correct link |
|---|---|
| +971 50 000 0000 (UAE) | https://wa.me/971500000000 |
| +966 50 000 0000 (Saudi Arabia) | https://wa.me/966500000000 |
| +44 (0)20 0000 0000 (UK) | https://wa.me/442000000000 |
| 00965 5000 0000 (Kuwait) | https://wa.me/96550000000 |

The numbers above are placeholders. The link opens a chat with your number whether or not the customer has saved it. Nothing is sent until the customer taps send, so the conversation is customer-initiated.

The same link works for numbers on the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). The difference is what happens next: on the API, the first message opens a [24-hour customer service window](/blog/whatsapp-24-hour-customer-service-window/) and can be routed to a team inbox.

## How do I add a prefilled message?

Add `?text=` and the URL-encoded message: `https://wa.me/971500000000?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20a%20quote`.

Spaces become `%20`, commas `%2C` and apostrophes `%27`. Arabic text also works but must be URL-encoded; let a URL encoder do it rather than typing codes by hand.

Good prefilled messages:

- **Say what the customer wants**: "Hi, I'd like to book a test drive."
- **Carry context**: product name, store or campaign, such as "Order help – packaging insert."
- **Stay short.** If you use Meta's API-generated QR codes, the limit is 140 characters.
- **Sound like the customer**, not like an ad. They will send it under their own name.
- **Include a reference code** for tracking, such as "[MALL2]."

Customers can edit or delete the prefilled text, so never rely on it as the only data source.

## How do I create a WhatsApp QR code for print and stores?

You have two options: encode a wa.me link in any QR generator, or create codes through Meta on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

| | wa.me link in a QR generator | Meta QR codes and short links (API) |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | Business app and API numbers | API phone numbers |
| Prefilled message | Fixed in the link | Up to 140 characters, editable later |
| Change without reprinting | Only if the QR points to your own redirect | Yes, update the message on the same code |
| Image format | Depends on the generator | SVG or PNG; Meta recommends SVG for print |
| Limit | None from WhatsApp | Up to 2,000 codes and short links per number |
| Analytics from WhatsApp | None | None (Meta does not log analytics for these) |

Codes from Meta are created in Business Manager or through the API's `message_qrdls` endpoint. They return a short link and a QR image.

### Print and packaging checklist

- [ ] Export as **SVG or high-resolution PNG**; never screenshot a code.
- [ ] Keep a **quiet zone** (white margin) around the code.
- [ ] Use **dark code on a light background** with strong contrast; avoid placing it over photos.
- [ ] Size it for the **scanning distance**: larger on posters and windows than on receipts.
- [ ] Avoid curved, glossy or folded areas on packaging.
- [ ] Add a **call to action and benefit** next to it: "Scan to track your order on WhatsApp."
- [ ] Print the **number in text** too, for people who cannot scan.
- [ ] **Test-print** and scan with several Android and iOS phones under store lighting.
- [ ] Say **when you reply**, for example "Replies 9:00–21:00, Saturday to Thursday."

## How do I track which link or QR code started a chat?

WhatsApp does not tell you who clicked a link or scanned a code. You measure chats that arrive, and attribute them by design.

1. **Unique prefilled message per placement.** "Hi, I scanned the code at the Riyadh Park store [RP01]." Count chats containing each code.
2. **Landing page with UTM parameters** for digital placements. Send traffic to a page on your site, measure visits in analytics, then hand off to wa.me with a placement code.
3. **Your own redirect** for print. A QR that points to a short URL on your domain logs the scan, then redirects to wa.me. You can also change the destination later.
4. **Tag conversations** in your inbox by placement so you can report chats, sales and resolution by source.

Keep a simple register: placement, link or code, prefilled text, reference code, start date and owner. Without it, codes multiply and nobody knows which are live.

## Where should click-to-chat links and QR codes go?

Put them where a customer has a question at that moment.

- **Website:** product pages, checkout help, contact page and order confirmation.
- **Email and SMS:** support signatures and delivery notifications.
- **Packaging and inserts:** setup help, warranty registration, reorders.
- **Receipts and invoices:** returns, feedback and loyalty.
- **In store:** shelf talkers, fitting rooms, counters and windows for after-hours enquiries.
- **Events and business cards:** a WhatsApp QR on the card starts a chat with the right person or team.
- **Social profiles:** link in bio and profile buttons.

## Worked example: a Kuwait perfume brand

Oud Al Bahar, a synthetic fragrance brand in Kuwait, sells online and through three mall kiosks. It creates five links with distinct prefilled messages:

| Placement | Prefilled message |
|---|---|
| Website product page | "Hi, I have a question about this fragrance [WEB]" |
| Gift box insert | "Hi, I'd like help choosing my next scent [BOX]" |
| Kiosk counter sign | "Hi, I'm at your kiosk and need help [KIOSK]" |
| Order confirmation email | "Hi, I have a question about my order [EMAIL]" |
| Instagram bio | "Hi, I saw you on Instagram [IG]" |

Agents tag each chat by code in the shared inbox. After a month the team sees which placements bring sales conversations and which bring support questions, and moves staff hours accordingly. The gift box insert is printed with a code pointing to the brand's own redirect, so the destination can change for future seasons without reprinting.

## Common mistakes and limits

- **Including the plus sign or a leading zero** in the link, which breaks it.
- **Printing a code nobody tested** on real phones and real lighting.
- **Promising instant replies** you cannot staff. Post reply hours instead.
- **Treating a scan as marketing consent.** A customer starting a chat is not consent to promotions. See [opt-in and consent](/blog/opt-in-consent-multichannel-campaigns/).
- **Expecting click data from WhatsApp.** It is not provided; build tracking into the link.
- **Sending all codes to one personal phone.** Volume grows fast; plan a team inbox.
