answer: "Click-to-WhatsApp ads are Facebook and Instagram ads whose button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business instead of a website. You connect your WhatsApp number to a Facebook Page, choose messaging apps and WhatsApp as the conversion location in Ads Manager, and write an opening message. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, replying within 24 hours opens a free entry point window that may remain open for up to 7 days, and the ad referral data lets you route and measure each lead."
takeaways: ["Click-to-WhatsApp ads run on Facebook and Instagram and open a WhatsApp chat with a prefilled or welcome message when tapped.", "Under Meta's pricing documentation, replying within 24 hours to a chat from a Click to WhatsApp ad on mobile opens a free entry point window, which may remain open for up to 7 days, in which Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages.", "The WhatsApp Business Platform webhook includes a referral object with the ad ID, headline and a ctwa_clid click ID for each ad-started conversation.", "Meta's Conversions API for Business Messaging accepts events such as LeadSubmitted, QualifiedLead and Purchase with the ctwa_clid to measure and optimise ads.", "The ad only starts the conversation; response speed, routing and agent follow-up decide whether it turns into revenue."]
faq:
  - q: "Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to run Click-to-WhatsApp ads?"
a: "No. The WhatsApp Business app can be linked to a Facebook Page and used with these ads. The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) adds what matters at scale: a shared team inbox, routing, referral data in webhooks, the free entry point window for API messaging and conversion reporting through the Conversions API for Business Messaging."
  - q: "How long is the free window after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?"
a: "According to Meta's pricing documentation, when a customer messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad on the Android or iOS app and you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens from your reply and may remain open for up to 7 days. While it is open, Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages, including templates. The 24-hour customer service window still controls when free-form messages are allowed."
  - q: "Which campaign objective should I use for Click-to-WhatsApp ads?"
a: "Meta offers messaging destinations under several objectives, such as Engagement, Leads and Sales, and the options change over time. Choose by the outcome you can measure: conversations if you track nothing downstream, leads or purchases if you send conversion events back to Meta. Confirm current options in Ads Manager."
  - q: "How do I know which ad a WhatsApp lead came from?"
a: "On the WhatsApp Business Platform, the first message from an ad includes a referral object in the webhook with the ad's source ID, URL, headline and a ctwa_clid click ID. Store these with the conversation so agents see the ad context and your reports can connect leads and sales to specific ads."
  - q: "Are Click-to-WhatsApp ads allowed for every industry?"
a: "No. Ads must follow Meta's Advertising Standards, and conversations must follow the WhatsApp Business and Commerce Policies, which restrict some categories of goods and services. Regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare should also check local advertising rules, for example in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, before launching."

# Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: Setup, Free Window, Routing and Results

Canonical: https://omnichannels.ai/blog/click-to-whatsapp-ads-guide/
Language: en
Publisher: OmniChannels.ai by BroadNet Technologies

This guide is for performance marketers and sales or CX leads who want Facebook and Instagram ads to start WhatsApp conversations that turn into leads and orders. It covers setup, the free entry point window, how to route ad leads to the right agent within minutes, and how to measure results beyond "conversations started."

## What are Click-to-WhatsApp ads?

Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) ads are Facebook and Instagram ads with a button that opens a WhatsApp chat with your business. The customer sees a prefilled or welcome message and sends the first message themselves.

They suit products where people want to ask before buying: real estate, cars, education, travel, clinics, high-value retail and B2B services. They are less useful when the customer can buy in two taps on a website and has no questions.

| | Click-to-WhatsApp ad | Website or lead form ad |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer gets | A live conversation | A page or a form |
| First data you receive | A message, phone number and WhatsApp profile name | Form fields or a site visit |
| Follow-up channel | Same WhatsApp chat | Call, email or SMS later |
| Speed sensitivity | High; the customer expects a reply | Medium |
| Staffing need | Agents or automation to reply | Sales team callback |
| Measurement | Conversations, then leads and sales sent back via Conversions API | Pixel, Conversions API and forms |

## How do I set up a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?

You connect the WhatsApp number to a Facebook Page, then select WhatsApp as the messaging destination in Ads Manager.

### Prerequisites

- [ ] A Facebook Page you administer and, for Instagram placements, an Instagram account linked to it.
- [ ] A WhatsApp business number, ideally on the WhatsApp Business Platform for team handling. See our [API setup guide](/blog/how-to-set-up-whatsapp-business-api/).
- [ ] An ad account with a valid payment method and no restrictions.
- [ ] Agents or an after-hours plan ready before the ads go live.

### Steps

1. **Link WhatsApp to the Page.** In the Page's settings, add the WhatsApp number and confirm it. If the Page and WhatsApp account sit in different business portfolios, the owner must approve the connection.
2. **Create a campaign** in Ads Manager with an objective that supports messaging destinations, such as Engagement, Leads or Sales. Labels change, so follow Ads Manager's current options.
3. **Set the conversion location** to messaging apps and choose **WhatsApp**.
4. **Write the opening message.** Use a prefilled message or a welcome message sequence with a greeting and up to a few ice-breaker questions such as "See prices," "Book a viewing" or "Talk to sales."
5. **Choose placements** across Facebook and Instagram, and test whether mobile-only delivery performs better for your audience.
6. **Build the creative** around the question you want customers to ask, with the price or offer stated honestly.
7. **Test the full path** on Android and iOS: tap the ad, send the message, confirm it reaches the right agent queue with the ad referral.

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, welcome message sequences can also be created through the API and attached to the ad; a sequence linked to an active ad cannot be deleted until it is disconnected.

## How does the free entry point window work?

According to Meta's pricing documentation, when a customer messages you from a Click to WhatsApp ad using the Android or iOS app, the normal 24-hour customer service window opens. If you reply within 24 hours, the reply is free and opens a **free entry point (FEP) window that may remain open for up to 7 days**. While it is open, Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages, including templates; Meta Business Agent messages remain charged.

Two rules matter:

- **Reply within 24 hours**, or the FEP window never opens. Fast first replies protect both conversion and cost.
- **The FEP and the 24-hour window are independent.** If the customer goes quiet for 24 hours, you can only send templates, but those are free until the FEP window ends.

Chats from desktop or web clients do not qualify. Our guide to the [24-hour customer service window](/blog/whatsapp-24-hour-customer-service-window/) explains the base rules, and the [pricing guide](/blog/whatsapp-business-api-pricing-2026/) covers what is charged after the free window.

## How should ad leads be routed to a shared inbox?

Treat ad chats as hot leads with their own queue, not as general support. The customer just tapped an ad and is waiting.

1. **Capture the referral.** On the API, the first message carries a referral object: ad source ID, source URL, headline, body, media and the `ctwa_clid` click ID. Save it with the conversation.
2. **Tag by campaign or ad** automatically so agents see which offer the customer saw.
3. **Route by intent.** Ice-breaker answers, such as "Book a viewing" versus "Prices," can go to different teams.
4. **Route by language.** In the GCC, offer Arabic and English agents and route by the customer's language or by the ad's language.
5. **Set a first-response target** measured in minutes during staffed hours, and an honest auto-reply out of hours.
6. **Qualify in the chat** with two or three questions, then hand off to sales or book the appointment.
7. **Use the FEP window** for follow-ups such as brochures, location pins or a reminder template, while it is free.

Our [shared inbox guide](/blog/shared-inbox-whatsapp-instagram-email/) explains queues, assignment and collision handling across channels.

## How do I measure Click-to-WhatsApp ad results?

Ads Manager reports conversations started, but that number alone hides lead quality. Measure the full funnel.

| Stage | Metric | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Ad | Cost per conversation started | Ads Manager |
| Response | Median first-response time for ad chats | Your inbox |
| Qualification | Qualified leads per conversation | Agent tags or CRM |
| Sale | Orders or bookings, revenue | CRM, POS or store |
| Return to Meta | LeadSubmitted, QualifiedLead, Purchase events | Conversions API for Business Messaging |

Meta's **Conversions API for Business Messaging** lets you send events back with `action_source` set to `business_messaging`, `messaging_channel` set to `whatsapp` and the stored `ctwa_clid`. Supported events include LeadSubmitted, QualifiedLead, InitiateCheckout, Purchase and order status events. This helps Meta optimise delivery toward people who become customers, not just people who send a message. Meta notes that these events should represent interactions that happen in the messaging thread, and partners are responsible for deduplication.

## Worked example: an Abu Dhabi real estate developer

Saraya Residences, a synthetic developer in Abu Dhabi, runs CTWA ads for a new off-plan launch in Arabic and English. The welcome message offers three ice breakers: "Prices and payment plans," "Book a site visit" and "Send me the brochure."

Ad chats land in a dedicated queue tagged with the ad ID. Arabic-language ads route to Arabic-speaking agents. Brochure requests get a PDF immediately, site visit requests go to the sales team, and agents answer within minutes during staffed hours. Inside the free entry point window, agents send the floor plans and a visit reminder.

Each qualified lead and booked visit is sent back as a QualifiedLead event with the `ctwa_clid`. After a few weeks, the team compares cost per qualified lead by ad, not cost per conversation, and moves budget to the creatives that bring buyers.

## Common mistakes and limits

- **Launching without staffed replies.** Slow answers waste the click and the free window.
- **Vague creative.** Ads that hide the price or offer attract curious chats, not buyers.
- **Losing the referral data.** Without saving the ad ID and `ctwa_clid`, you cannot connect sales to ads.
- **Optimising for conversations only.** Cheap conversations can be low quality.
- **Treating a chat as marketing consent.** Ask for opt-in before adding contacts to campaigns. See [opt-in and consent](/blog/opt-in-consent-multichannel-campaigns/).
- **Ignoring policy.** Meta's Advertising Standards and WhatsApp's Commerce Policy restrict some categories.

## How OmniChannels.ai helps

OmniChannels.ai, powered by BroadNet Technologies, onboards your WhatsApp Business API number through Meta Embedded Signup. Ad-started chats land in the [Omni Inbox](/platform/unified-inbox/) next to Instagram, Telegram and Email, where agents are assigned and reply with media and approved templates in Arabic or English. Chatbots and [AI agents](/platform/ai-agents/) can qualify leads before handing over to a human. For follow-up with opted-in contacts, [campaigns](/platform/campaigns/) support CSV upload, scheduling and duplicate filtering, with delivery reports. CRM sync uses the public [REST API and webhooks](/developers/). Book a demo to map your ad-to-sale flow.
