# What is the difference between RCS and SMS?

**Short answer:** RCS and SMS both land in the phone's native messaging app, but they differ in content and reach. SMS carries short plain text over the mobile network and reaches almost every phone. RCS business messaging adds a verified brand sender, rich cards, carousels, media and suggested replies, but only works where carrier and device support it.

## RCS and SMS side by side

| Aspect | SMS | RCS business messaging |
|---|---|---|
| Sender | Sender ID, short code or long code | Verified agent with brand name and logo |
| Content | Text, 160 GSM-7 or 70 UCS-2 characters per segment | Text up to 3,072 characters, rich cards, carousels, media |
| Interaction | Free-text reply where the sender ID allows it | Up to 11 suggested replies and actions per message |
| Transport | Mobile network signalling | Mobile data or Wi-Fi |
| Reach | Almost every mobile phone | Depends on carrier launch and device support |

## When should a business use RCS instead of SMS?

Use RCS where the message benefits from images, buttons or a visible brand: product offers, booking confirmations, delivery tracking and customer surveys. The verified sender also helps customers tell real messages from spoofed ones.

Use SMS when reach matters most, for example OTPs, critical alerts and audiences in markets where RCS has not launched on the main networks.

## How to combine RCS and SMS

OmniChannels.ai supports RCS with automatic SMS fallback where RCS is not available, with delivery statuses normalised into one webhook format.

1. Check each number's RCS capability before sending.
2. Send RCS to capable numbers and SMS to the rest.
3. Write an SMS version of every RCS message with the essential information and link.
4. Measure delivery and clicks per channel, then adjust the order per use case.
